This is a typhical VOR approach. The VOR is located at the field, and
serves both as an
IAF and MAP.
" When able, fly direct gr4andstrand VOR, cross the VOR at 3000,
report procedure turn
inbound, cleared VOR 23 approach "
Tune in 117,6 on both NAV radios and identify both. Use no. 1 , and turn
the obs until the
CDI centers with a TO flag. turn to this heading, and track towards the
VOR.
The reciprocal of the inbound heading is the radial you are on, and also
your geographical
position in ref. to the VOR,
Set your no. 2 NAV to the outbound radial of 058.
when you cross the VOR, start your timer, and track the outbound radial.
As you are cleared for the approach, descend down towards 1700 ft.
Tune the no. 1 NAV to the inbound radial of 238. Complete the before landing
checklist.
After around 3 min. start the procedure turn outbound. Fly heading around
110 for 1 min.
then turn to intercept the inbound course - around 280. Report inbound.
When the CDI centers, turn inbound, and start down towards your MDA.
This approach has different minima, depending wether or not you have DME
available.
Without DME, MDA is 520 ft.
If you have DME, MDA is 460, with a stepdown at 2 DME.
Usually you are now told to contact tower for landing clearance.
Fly down to the MDA or stepdown, level off, and look for the airport.
If you do not see the airport, and the TO flips to a FROM, that is your
missed approach
signal !!
Many times, this approach is flown " partial panel " , meaning
you have lost your
vacuum pump witch runs the attitude indicator, and directional gyro.
In other words, you must fly on the compass, and that`s something you
will find really
funny and challenging .. hehehe.
